This happens often in homes that enjoy soothing candlelight, because wax can drip or spill on to your pristine carpets. Below we have shared a plan to get wax out of carpet so you don’t have to pay to clean or replace your carpets.
Restoring your carpets after a wax spill may seem tough, but this simple four-step process will help you get wax out of your carpet using items from around the house.
Materials You Will Need
- Small bag of ice or an ice pack
- Iron or hair dryer
- Butter knife
- Paper towel or washcloth
- Carpet cleaner or rubbing alcohol
- Vacuum
Step 1: Freezing the wax
As soon as you notice the spill, begin cleaning the wax. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to remove. If the wax is still wet, begin by putting a bag of ice or ice pack on to the area for about 10 minutes, allowing the wax to freeze. While you’re doing this, make sure the wax isn’t getting wet as additional moisture will make it harder to freeze and then remove. If the wax stain has been there for a while and is already dry, you can skip this step and start with step 2.
Step 2: Scraping the wax
Once the wax is frozen or hardened, use a butter knife to scrape off as much excess as you can. You will need to apply pressure, but still be careful to avoid damaging or tearing the carpet fibers. Vacuum up the scraped off pieces and continue to Step 3.
Step 3: Absorbing the leftover wax
Place a paper towel, brown paper bag, or washcloth on top of the remaining wax. Take your iron or hair dryer and begin to heat the spill on a low setting. Make sure the steam function is turned off to avoid adding any extra moisture to the area. Run your iron over the towel to heat the wax. Make sure you are constantly moving the iron and keep the heat low to avoid burning the paper or your carpet. Once you see the wax beginning to absorb into the towel, continue moving it around the wax in small circular movements. Repeat this step for as long as necessary until all the wax is gone.
Step 4: Cleaning your carpet
The last step is to clean the stained area. This will also help remove any leftover wax or wet stain left after cleaning up. For colored candle wax, it is best to use a white towel with rubbing alcohol on it to gently dab the stain until any color is gone. Be mindful when rubbing the alcohol into your carpet to avoid damaging the fibers of your carpet, and open a window or use a fan to help it dry. Once this has dried, run your vacuum over the area to help the natural texture of your carpet return.
